Discovering Robeson is the title given to a presentation done by Tayo Aluko which consists of readings from various versions of his play, Call Mr Robeson. Currently a successful one-man play, previous versions have included a cast of up to fourteen characters, including Paul’s wife, Essie, his son Paul Jnr., members of the House Un-American Activities Committee, and various fictitious characters.
In Discovering Robeson, Tayo invites the audience to accompany him on a journey which describes his introduction to the great man, and his subsequent quest to bring his story to the theatrical stage. It includes various facts not included in the play, informal chat, and several songs associated with Paul Robeson, including some lesser known ones, and a humorous song specially composed for Tayo.
Discovering Robeson has been developed alongside Call Mr Robeson for performance in venues which do not have facilities for theatrical performances, such as lecture theatres, school or community halls, churches etc... The only requirement is for a tuned piano, though this can sometimes be provided by Tayo Aluko and Friends.
